TRAI to set 'minimum download speed' for mobile Internet
Thanks to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), you may no longer have to grapple with the slower Internet speed on your mobile phone. The telecom regulator has just released a consultation paper to examine the minimum download speeds for mobile phones.
In a release, the regulator says the consultation paper on amendment to “The Standards of Quality of Service for Wireless Data Services Regulations, 2012” aims to examine the benchmark for “minimum download speed” being offered through various technologies, so that the minimum download speeds are transparently made available to the consumers.
"The Authority (TRAI) has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding the poor download speed experienced by them. The Authority after examining the issue felt that there is now a need to mandate the 'minimum download speed' for the wireless data services," TRAI added in the release.
The authority seeks to prescribe a minimum download speed for wireless data services, which will be based on the data on minimum download speed reported by service providers in the last three qarters. The regulator has proposed along with each tariff plan for data services, mentioning minimum download speed should be mandatory on all vouchers, websites and advertisments etc.
Currently, there's no binding regulation on telcos to deliver a minimum speed for wireless services. If implemented, the move will help users, especially heavy data consumers,
make a better decision on selecting operator.

Obi Mobiles, backed by ex-Apple CEO, to launch affordable phones in India
Obi Mobiles, backed by ex-Apple CEO, to launch affordable phones in IndiaAnother mobile phone brand is set to enter the Indian market. Obi Mobiles, backed by former Apple CEO John Sculley, is planning to invest about $20 million this year to develop supply chain, design centre and sales/aftersales across India. First Obi Mobiles-branded phones are expected to hit the Indian market by early next month.
Like other smartphone players in India, Obi is also aiming at the “affordable” segment. The company says it plans to sell “affordable smartphones with superior technology”. According to reports, the company will be targeting the Rs. 5,000-Rs. 8,000 price range.
“India leads in mobile phone penetration. However owing to the delay in implementation of 3G services and high smartphone prices, the smartphone share in India is only 20%, leaving larger part of the ground with opportunities yet to be tapped,” says Sculley, co-founder and managing partner at Inflexionpoint, which is promoting Obi Mobiles. in a release.
The scenario becomes a favourable and attractive chance for us to launch Obi Mobiles and offer the best of the smartphone with an apt pricing model.”
After working with PepsiCo. for almost 15 years, Sculley joined Apple in 1983. He worked Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Sculley worked for Apple for about 10 years. You can r ead more about John Sculley here.
Ajay Sharma, who has previously worked with brands like Micromax and HTC, is the Obi Mobiles CEO. Obi will be competing against several Indian smartphone players such as Karbonn and Micromax, which have a strong base in the 'affordable smartphone' segment.
The company will also have to watch out for Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi , which is also entering the Indian marketwith "aggressively priced phones focused on performance and quality”. According to reports, Xiaomi is already in talks with telecom operators and other partners to build an eco-system in the country.
Leaked specification of moto e . leaked specs of moto e
Alleged specs of the yet to be announced Motorola Moto E leaked out. When launched, the smartphone will slot below the Moto G in the manufacturer’s product range.
Leaked specs of the Moto E include a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of built-in memory. The latter will likely be further expandable, as 4GB will not get you anywhere in terms of available storage these days.
The display of the Moto E is a 4.3" unit with unknown resolution (we would bet on a sub-720p screen). A 5MP main camera, front-facing snapper, 1,900mAh battery, FM radio, and Android 4.4 KitKat round up the list of known specifications.
The leaked 124.8 x 64.8 x 6.2mm physical measures of the Moto E are truly impressive. The handset will be significantly more elegant than both the Moto G (11.6mm thick) and the Moto X(10.4mm thick).
The Moto E is tipped to arrive in the coming weeks on the Mexican wireless carrier Telcel with the model number XT1021. Its price tag is certain to be lower than that of the Moto G.
