Micromax plans to raise funds, enter into PC business

Micromax has held discussions with a group of investors led by Japanese mobile telecom firm SoftBank Corp.MUMBAI: Indian smartphone maker Micromax Informatics Ltd is looking to raise capital from private investors or through a stock market listing, as it expands into new business segments including personal computing, its co-founder said.

Micromax, backed by private equity firms including Sequoia Capital and TA Associates, has held discussions with a group of investors led by Japanese mobile telecom firm SoftBank Corp , Reuters reported last month.

Those talks were about the sale of a 20 percent for up to $1 billion, two people had said, which values the Indian firm at around $5 billion.

Vikas Jain declined to confirm any ongoing talks but said the company was also open to the option of an initial public offering of shares possibly on a local stock exchange.

"As we talk, both the options remain open. We have various (investment) i-bankers who have approached us with either of the options and we're given to understand that there is sufficient amount of interest in Micromax," Jain told Reuters in an interview.

Micromax, which entered the Indian handset market in 2008 with cheap large-screen phones, had hired banks in 2010 for an IPO to raise as much as $150 million but scrapped the plan a year later, citing poor market sentiment.

Micromax likely to announce new product category on April 30 | I ,the Admin of ReviewRulezz ,think that Micromax could now possibly enter the Laptop Segment in which it could prove to be a big hit offering both cheap and high end laptops(ultrabooks).

micromax event

Micromax has sent out press invites for an event on April 30. The company has sent a cryptic image with a tagline ‘The next smart thing is coming soon’ indicating that the company is venturing beyond the smartphone, tablet and smart TV category, and foraying into a completely new segment.

The company has shared an image of a smartphone, tablet and a TV, indicating the evolution of the company’s business. Next to the TV is a ‘question mark’ which confirms that the company is not expanding its existing portfolio, but is completely entering into a new product category altogether. It will be interesting to see what product Micromax will be launching on April 30.

Prior to this invite, the company released a teaser on Twitter with a side image of what looks like 2-in-1 PC device. The image comes with a tagline ‘ The smartest move ever.’ This product is most likely to be launched at the April 30 event.

Alibaba reported to pick up 25% stake in Micromax at Rs 30,000 crore valuation, chairman Sanjay Kapoor may exit

micromax-canvas-spark-5

Chinese online giant, Alibaba, is reportedly looking at picking up a 25 percent stake in Micromax. The investment is likely to happen via its affiliate Ant Financial (erstwhile Alipay). Micromax was reportedly in talks with Alibaba and Japan’s Softbank. The report comes a day after Xiaomi announced Ratan Tata had invested an undisclosed sum in the Chinese smartphone company, which has turned into a major rival for Micromax, selling over a million smartphone units in less than five months of its entry in India.

The move would help Micromax’s existing investors – TA Associates, Sequoia Capital, Sandstone Partners and Madison India Capital HC – to unlock their investment in the company and could sell their entire stake. TA Associates had acquired a 15 percent stake in 2009 for Rs 100 crore, while Sequoia Capital, Sandstone Partners and Madison India Capital HC own 2.68 percent and around 0.4 percent stake respectively.

The reported investment by Alibaba could see Micromax valued between Rs 24,000 – Rs 30,000 crore. If this deal is successful, there will be a major rejig in the top management, and Economic Times reports that it may even lead to Chairman Sanjay Kapoor’s exit. Citing anonymous sources, the report states that the fundraising plan may be completed by June end.

The report also states that there are some internal differences between Kapoor and the promoters over the future business strategy. Reportedly Kapoor feels that online sales is the way forward, the promoters want to stick with traditional offline retail as it still brings 70 percent of revenue to the company. Rahul Sharma, Rajesh Agarwal, Sumeet Kumar and Vikas Jain are the four founders and they collectively own a little less than 80 percent of the company.
One of the sources told the publication that once the deal is done, for which the final call will be taken by the investment committee of Micromax, Kapoor may exit and new board members will be added. The investment committee comprises of promoters, top management and existing investors.
We contacted Micromax and the spokesperson of the company said:
As a company policy, we do not comment on any market speculation. Mr Sanjay Kapoor continues to be our chairman & an integral part of the company. Micromax board and management work under clear principles of consensus, and they are working cohesively (on all strategic & operational issues) with complete unanimity to build Micromax’s leadership in all our markets.

Lava, Intex likely to launch Android One devices in early 2015 | Must Read ! | A www.ReviewRulezz.tk Report

Lava and Intex, among a new set of Indian handset makers on the Google's Android One programme, are likely to bring handsets based on the project early next year.

Rather than a single Android One device each - as was launched by Micromax, Karbonn and Spice on Monday - Lava and Intex are likely to roll out a range of devices simultaneously, which would offer different specifications such as larger screens and better camera quality at wider price points. "It will take us at least three to four months (to launch the devices)," said Intex's head for mobile phones Sanjay Kalirona.

The first Android One smartphones from the new set of local players will start shipping after January, said Lava International's cofounder and managing director, SN Rai. Lava owns the Xolo brand under which it sells smartphones, while the parent brand also sells feature phones apart from smartphones.

Lava and Xolo will be able to tap into their own design houses, in a way becoming original design manufacturers due to which they will be able to drive price optimisation much deeper through their systems, Rai added. In other words, they may well be able to offer devices with higher specifications at competitive prices. More details on the new smartphones are expected to be revealed in the coming months.

Lava is one of nine handset makers that Google's head of Android, Chrome and apps, Sundar Pichai, announced as new partners who will make smartphones under the Android One umbrella, Google's initiative to offer rich smartphone experience on low-cost devices with set hardware and software standards across handset makers. Lava is India's No. 4 smartphone vendor with a 6% share of the market as per IDC. Intex is a much smaller player.

Pichai said on Monday that Google has also signed up international smartphone makers Acer, Asus, HTC, Lenovo, Panasonic and Alcatel One Touch under the project to connect the next five billion people with the Internet and Internet-enabled devices. Going forward, he said, vendors will be free to choose among a set of specifications to make smartphones, allowing faster updates and better Android experience.

The new leg of home-bred handset makers are likely to follow the footsteps of Micromax, Karbonn and Spice that began selling the first Android One phones - Canvas A1, Sparkle V and Dream Uno - respectively, through Amazon, Snapdeal and Flipkart. Micromax had sold out its first lot of 20,000-22,000 on Amazon on day one.

Micromax, Karbonn and Spice, which hold about 30% of the smartphone market in India, will begin selling the phones offline across 200,000 retail outlets countrywide next month and train staff to educate customers about the devices. Spice Mobility's chairman, Dilip Modi, told ET that the company's Spice Hot Spot retail stores will be converted to Android One stores for pushing sales, a model that the newer players just might follow.

“Expanding our partner ecosystem and making it easier to bring Windows Phones to new markets at, more price points remains a top priority. Several of our new partners such as BLU, InFocus, Prestigio and Yezz unveiled Windows Phones 8.1 devices at Computex a few weeks ago. These new devices are a result of the announcement we made back in February at Mobile World Congress with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and $0 Windows for devices smaller than 9-inches in size which has enabled partners to more quickly and efficiently bring Windows Phones in to their mobile devices portfolio,” says Microsoft on its official Windows Blog.
Of late, smartphone companies including Indian brands are looking for alternatives to Google's Android OS. While Samsung is already working on Tizen, Indian brands such as Xolo and Micromax are exploring the Windows platform. Recently, Xolo launched its first Windows 8.1 -based tablet – Xolo Win.
At the MWC 2014 event held earlier this year, Microsoft updated its device partners list for Windows Phone 8, adding device makers such as Foxconn, Gionee, JSR, Longcheer, Xolo (Lava) and Karbonn along with previous manufacturers Samsung, HTC, Huawei and ZTE.
Moreover, local brands Intex and Spice in coordination with Mozilla are going to soon launch low-cost Firefox-based smartphones in India.  That said, Micromax is one of the largest smartphone brands in India. Launch of budget Windows Phone devices from Micromax will certainly help boost adoption of Windows Phone platform in India.
