WhatsApp video-calling feature spotted online: report

WhatsApp is testing video-calling feature as well, according to a series of new
leaks that have surfaced online

After voice calls, WhatsApp is reportedly rumoured to be working on video calls. There are no officials dates or information from WhatsApp as to when the video-calling feature will go live. According to German website Macerkopf, users can opt for both the cameras for video-calls.

For WhatsApp, adding new features is no longer a question of choice, but one of necessity. With over 900 million monthly active users , the app is now as big as its parent company Facebook. With Facebook Messenger already supporting video-calling, WhatsApp needs to evolve and add more features.

While the voice-calling was already announced this year, video-calling appears to be the natural next step of progression for WhatsApp.

It will be interesting to see how WhatsApp video calls perform on mobile Internet. While free WhatsApp voice calls attracted a lot of attention from users before, but soon people started to ignore it, at least in India, where it is almost impossible to have a proper conversation on even 3G networks.

In order to be successful, the video-calls will have to be optimised for slower networks, especially for regions like India where WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps.

WhatsApp had recently announced that they have over 900 million monthly active users.

Whatsapp may add free video calling feature in its upcoming updates. Whatsapp will probably activate video calling for a small number of users first, to get feedback and avoid server overload, like it did for its calling feature.

Facebook apologises for Year in Review feature

Facebook has apologised for its Year in Review feature after users complained of the images selected to highlight their years.

A free-to-use service which automatically selects images from users’ accounts to recap their time in 2014, Year in Review received criticisms for its at times less than tactful picture choices.

Examples of the feature’s issues include the use of images of a person’s house on fire and pictures of users’ recently deceased relatives.

Tragically, the flaws of Year in Review were highlighted when one user, Eric Meyer, was confronted with pictures of his six year old daughter who died earlier in the year.

Describing the feature’s image selection as “jarring” and “wrong”, Mr Meyer has received a formal apology from Facebook after his story went viral.

Although acknowledging that Facebook’s mishap was far form a directed attack, Meyer, speaking in a blog post stated: “This inadvertent algorithmic cruelty is the result of code that works only in the overwhelming majority of cases.”

He added: “The Year in Review ad keeps coming up in my feed. There wasn’t enough thought given to cases like mine or anyone who had a bad year.

“The design is for the ideal user, the happy, upbeat, good-life user. It doesn’t take other user cases into account.”

With Meyer having received a public apology from Facebook Product Manager Jonathan Gheller, the social media head told the Washington Post that Facebook has stated looking at ways to improve the Year in Review algorithm.

He stated: "[The app] was awesome for a lot of people, but clearly in this case we brought him grief rather than joy.”

Facebook was once again down for many of it's users.WTF was this !

WWW.FACEBOOK.COM beast of social networking site was once again down yesterday (1/8/2014) for around 10-30 mins(as reported on our fb page https://www.facebook.com/reviewrulezz.tk). Last time it was mysteriously down on 19th of June and because of this many users were unable to use the site on their PC's ,tablets, smartphone or other such devices.Same error "Something went wrong" as can be seen in the picture attached, were reported by many of it's users. What could have been the problem ? Huge amount of traffic over-limiting the bandwidth ? Or an internal attack on Facebook security ?

Facebook SDK Vulnerability : Millions of user accounts at risk

 

Security researchers from MetaIntell, the leader in intelligent led Mobile Risk Management (MRM), have discovered a major security vulnerability in the latest version of Facebook SDK that put millions of Facebook user's Authentication Tokens at risk.

Facebook SDK for Android and iOS is the easiest way to integrate mobile apps with Facebook platform, which provides support for Login with Facebook authentication, reading and writing to Facebook APIs and many more.

Facebook OAuth authentication or ‘Login as Facebook’ mechanism is a personalized and secure way for users to sign into 3rd party apps without sharing their passwords.
After the user approves the permissions as requested by the application, the Facebook SDK implements the OAuth 2.0 User-Agent flow to retrieve the secret user’s access token required by the apps to call Facebook APIs to read, modify or write user's Facebook data on their behalf.

ACCESSING UNENCRYPTED ACCESS TOKEN
It is important that your secret token is never shared with anyone, but researchers found that Facebook SDK Library stores it in an unencrypted format on the device’s file system, which can be accessed easily even on a non-rooted Android or jailed iOS Device.

“With just 5 seconds of USB connectivity, Access token is available on iOS via juice jacking attack, no jailbreak needed and on Android file system, it can be accessed via recovery mode which is tricker and require more time.” as said by Chilik Tamir, Chief architect for MetaIntell.
THREAT FROM OTHER APPS
Moreover, any 3rd party smartphone application with permission to access device file system can read this file and able to steal users’ Facebook access tokens remotely, he said.
Researchers dubbed the vulnerability as “Social Login Session Hijacking”. Once exploited, could allow an attacker to access victim’s Facebook account information using access token and session hijacking method.


All those iOS and Android apps are vulnerable to this attack, who are using Facebook SDK for app login and storing users unencrypted access token on the device,- Chilik Tamir.

“MetaIntell has identified that 71 of the top 100 free iOS apps use the Facebook SDK and are vulnerable, impacting the over 1.2 billion downloads of these apps. Of the top 100 Android apps, 31 utilize the Facebook SDK and therefore make vulnerable the over 100 billion downloads of these apps.” researcher said in a blog post.

PASSIVE RESPONSE FROM FACEBOOK SECURITY TEAM!

MetaIntell team has already informed Facebook Security team about the vulnerability, but it seems that Facebook is not in any mood to update their SDK with a fix.
“I followed up with our Platform team to see if there were any changes they wanted to make here: - On the Android side we've concluded that we will not be making any changes: we are comfortable with the level of security provided by the Android OS. - On the iOS side the team is exploring the possibility of moving the access token storage to the keychain in order to comply with best practices.” Facebook replied to MetaIntell after bug report.
WHAT TO DO?
-Mobile app users are advised to do not use ‘Facebook Login’ option within Mobile apps and disallow apps to use their Facebook login. App Developers are recommended to move their users’ access tokens from device file system to secure online storage with encrypted channel.
