OnePlus co-founder talks OnePlus 2, invites, June 1st tease and Australia

20150529_105024

A trip to Google I/O often brings the opportunity to interact with people you wouldn’t normally have the chance to meet and speak with. One such opportunity presented itself, with Carl Pei, co-founder ofOnePlus attending the event in San Francisco. I asked Carl for a few minutes of his time to discuss a few topics such as their upcoming phone, the June 1st ‘Time to Change’ tease and the invite system and he kindly agreed.
To start with, Carl clarified that their upcoming phone will be known as the ‘OnePlus 2′ with a number not the written word ‘two’. The phone, he said, would launch in the third quarter of 2015, though he wouldn’t be drawn on whether it would be closer to July or to September, clarifying only ‘sometime in Q3′.

Invites

The invite system – which has been somewhat unloved by the legions of fans who profess love for the OnePlus One – was also a topic he touched on.
On the first year of sales and scarcity of the OnePlus One, he said they were overwhelmed with the popularity of the phone at launch, something that they are a more confident about this year. He said:
“In our first year, we were very risk averse, we didn’t how many people would buy the phones. We only manufactured a very small amount of phones, but this year we are a lot more confident.”
oneplus-one-invite
The maligned invite system, which OnePlus used to help them maintain control of sales and inventory for the OnePlus One will be returning, but it could see a better response if their plan works this time around.
“So even though we’re going out and rolling out with invites in the beginning, there’s going to be a lot more invites to go around. Which I think the user experience will be a lot better.”

Can they repeat the OnePlus One’s success?

The OnePlus One was quite a winner in terms of popularity, though the team is worried about their so-called ‘second album’ and whether they will be able to repeat the success of the original, or become a simple one-hit wonder. Carl said
“Internally we’re super anxious actually about how we’ll do with the OnePlus 2, because when we started this company, we thought this phone would only do 50,000 – 100,000 phones, we ended up doing almost a million phones.”
Carl did say that they will have a similar low-budget strategy to marketing the OnePlus 2, as they prefer to pass savings on to the users than throw money after advertising.
Software wise, OnePlus are aware of users preference for a ‘Stock’ Android experience, something they’re keen to deliver with OxygenOS for the Western markets, while they have HydrogenOS for their Eastern markets. There will be lots to announce with regards to features in OxygenOS, when the phone launches in Q3.
Carl did advise that the phone would definitely support the custom ROM scene that has seen the OnePlus One scale heights as a much preferred device for Android lovers who enjoy modding their phone.
OnePlus - Time To Change
The upcoming ‘Time to Change’ tease from OnePlus the other day certainly attracted many rumours of a OnePlus 2 launch, not so according to Mr Pei, ‘it’s not a new device’ he said. On the subject of what exactly their ‘Time to Change’ announcement means to OnePlus, he wouldn’t be drawn.

Will we see the OnePlus 2 in Australia?

Finally, we spoke about availability. The OnePlus One is now available in almost 30 markets, with direct shipping, however Australia isn’t one of them. Carl was interested in how many OnePlus handsets I’ve seen around – it’s a lot – and I advised him of this.
Carl asked about which Australian company they could partner with, advising that due to their nature, whoever it was would need to deal with a very low margin on handsets – somewhere in the realm of going as low as 3% could be needed.
While Carl has no immediate plans to enter the Australian market that he was willing to share, he seemed genuinely interested in Australia as a potential future market – if the right partner could be found.
The OnePlus 2 will launch in Q3 this year, with improved access to invites and what we’re sure will be top of the line hardware. In the meantime, we’ll find out what ‘Time to Change’ actually means on Monday when the time to change comes around.

Microsoft has revealed its anime mascot for Windows 10

Windows 10 Mascot

if you’re a fan of anime, you’re likely applauding Microsoft for its latest promotional efforts. Microsoft’s Japanese offices have unveiled the company’s mascot for Windows 10, the latest operating system set to debut this summer. The mascot is an anime-stylized image of a blue-haired woman in a miniskirt, according to WindowsCentral.

The young woman, who is currently nameless, will have her own campaign in June. You’ll be able to offer your opinion on what her name should be. Thus far, we know that she is 17 years old and comes from 100 years in the future. She works at the gadget-heavy Tokyo neighborhood of Akihabara, and in terms of hobbies, she loves gaming (of course). Her attire gives her a schoolgirl-like appearance located on the corner of chic and cute.

Microsoft announces native Dolby Digital Plus support for Windows 10

Voiceover Actress Ai Nonaka is slated to provide the blue-haired girl with a voice of her own. If you enter the public campaign to name the mascot, which begins on June 19, you’ll be eligible for a series of prizes. Five Grand Prizes will be autographed by Nonaka herself.

While this may seem a little odd in Western culture, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Microsoft has used this type of advertising in Japan. The company had similar mascots for Windows 7, 8 and Internet Explorer.

Related: Windows 10 Build 10122 rolls out in the fast lane

Nanami Madobe, a similar-looking blue-haired schoolgirl, was the mascot for Windows 7, and she was given her own video, according to The Verge. Two different characters were used to promote Windows 8 and RT, both of them being schoolgirls (Madobe Yu and Madobe Ai). And a blond-haired anime girl named Inori Aizawa was introduced to promote Internet Explorer. Microsoft gave Inori her own Facebook page, video, website, and a series of wallpapers.

Throughout the past decade, there have been more than 10 separate anime characters created to raise awareness of Microsoft’s products. The latest creation for Windows 10 shows that the practice won’t be slowing down any time soon.

ANDROID M HANDS-ON: A FIRST LOOK AT THE BIGGEST NEW FEATURES

Android M – Hands On

Google officially unveiled Android M at its developer keynote in San Francisco on May 28, and it didn’t take long for the promised preview builds to make their way to the public. So, like the intrepid technology journalists we are, we quickly installed M on a spare Nexus 6 we found lying around the office and dived deep into the preview.

We quickly learned there wasn’t much to uncover, though. Google’s exceptionally brief Android announcement at I/O seems to reflect the changes, or lack thereof, present in M so far. There are definitely a few notable additions worth mentioning, a new app drawer and permissions management among them, but unlike Lollipop, M seems very much a refinement of Android rather than a reimagining.

The new app drawer declutters your collection

The first thing you’ll probably notice is the new app drawer. Unlike every major release of Android since Ice Cream Sandwich, apps scroll vertically, not horizontally, in the drawer. Open it, and you’re presented with a long list of shortcuts arranged alphabetically. Big uppercase letters on the left-hand side indicate groupings, and a search bar now resides at the top for faster access to specific apps.

Everything you need to know about Google’s new Android M

Our first impressions are pretty good. In terms of design, the new drawer isn’t the most efficient — the app icons are larger and there’s more white space between them — but the result is a cleaner, less cluttered collection.

App permissions let you decide

The new app drawer is the most obvious interface change in M, but there’s a subtler one with far bigger implications: a permissions management screen for every app. The permissions feature represents a fundamental change to the way Android has handled app access to user and sensor data to date.

Android M Hands On

Basically, instead of having to approve a bunch of suspect permissions before you can install an app, you’re now able to be a little more selective, cutting off an app’s access to specific data — your location, for example, or the content of your text messages. Even better, you can enable and disable those permissions at will — The system’s simple enough.

Google set to battle Apple with new Android Pay

Google has pared its previously lengthy list of permissions down to eight key types, all enabled or disabled either on a per-app basis within the app’s settings page or as blanket policies (if you wish to, say, prevent all apps from reading your contacts). Permissions management worked well enough in our testing, but be forewarned that disabling permissions essential to an app’s function will have predictably undesirable results. It turns out Google Maps needs to access GPS for turn-by-turn navigation. Who knew?

Other small improvements and more to come

There are other, smaller enhancements worth mentioning. Android now backs up all app and settings data to a dedicated Drive folder by default, which should make restoring your account on new devices easier. Apps can opt out of Doze, a battery-saving feature. And the (sometimes very obtrusive) heads-up notifications introduced in Lollipop can be switched off for apps individually.

Otherwise … that’s pretty much it. Besides tweaked volume controls and the triumphant return of a proper silent mode, the first developer preview of Android M is pretty bare. Absent is Now on Tap, which Google doesn’t plan to enable until Android M’s finalization later this year. Android Pay is MIA, too. Google’s promising over-the-air updates over the course of the preview period, so there’s hope that future versions will pack more changes, but Android M as it stands is practically indistinguishable from Lollipop. If you can’t get it right now, don’t fret — you’re not missing much yet.

Android 6.0 M Update: Nexus 5, Nexus 6/9, Nexus Player

Android 6.0 M for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player has finally been made available in the form  of a developer preview. As the name suggest, these are easy to flash half baked Android M images which are aimed at developers so that Google may improvise before the final release.

Android M Developer Preview

That’s right, Google didn’t waste any time yesterday after the keynote when we were able to get our hands on the developer preview build for Android 6.0 M update. Some people are upset that it wasn’t made available for the Nexus 4 or even the 2013 Nexus 7 but rumor has it that Google will be/has already retired those and they won’t get Android 6.0 M update at all. As of right now, you can download the Android 6.0 M update Developer Preview build for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player. This is just like we saw last year with the Android L developer preview builds and they should be treated as such.
This means that what we’re looking at right now is not the final code for Android 6.0 M update. Several features like Google Now on Tap are not available in the builds at this time. You can long-press on the home button and a little card will appear at the bottom but it just tells you that this feature is not yet available. Something that has changed from last year though is that these builds will receive OTA updates. That’s right! If you install an Android M Developer Preview on your Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 or even Nexus Player device then you’ll actually receive OTA updates for each new iteration of Android 6.0 M update. However, we shouldn’t expect that these OTA updates will take us from the developer preview to the final version when it is released. This might happen but I have my doubts right now.

How to Download And Install Android 6.0 M on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 And Nexus Player

Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player Android 6.0 M updateSo, how do you get Android 6.0 M update onto your Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 or Nexus Player device? The first thing you need to do is download the factory images for your specific device. Again, these builds are only available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player but we are hoping that the community can whip up ports of these for some of the older Nexus devices soon. Once you have the images downloaded and extracted onto your computer, then you’ll want to enable USB debugging on your phone or tablet. This feature can be found in the Developer Mode for your device so you’ll have to activate that hidden menu before you can enable it.
You’re also going to need to install Google’s USB drivers as well as installing the ADB and Fastboot tools too. Once those are on your computer, you’ll need to put the factory images in the same folder as the ADB and Fastboot tools. You can choose to copy the factory images into the fastboot directory or copy the fastboot tools into the factory images
directory. Either way should work. Then launch a command prompt in that folder and type the command ‘adb reboot bootloader’ without the quotes and press enter on the keyboard.

Then you’ll need to type ‘fastboot oem unlock’, again without the quotes, and then press enter. Once the bootloader of your Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 or Nexus Player is unlocked, you’ll then want to type the command ‘flash-all.bat’ and press enter on the keyboard. If everything was done correctly then you should see Fastboot copying all of the factory images onto your device. When finished, your smartphone or tablet will reboot and then you’ll be taken directly into the Android 6.0 M Developer Preview.

Android M Developer Preview AOSP Changelog Posted, Probably Not A Complete Platform Release

Android 6.0 M for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player
The Android M Developer Preview was released just yesterday and we're all very closely examining the changes. While there's still quite a bit to dig through, it looks like Google is getting some of the source code up right away. Before anybody gets too excited, it's likely that this code dump occurred to ensure GPL compliance. However, there are quite a few projects in the changelog that wouldn't normally require updates due to licensing, so there may be quite a bit more going live on this release.
The entire changelog totals about 29,000 commits and weighs in at about 4.7 MB. It's not entirely clear where the official starting point would be, but we generated the changelog from 5.1.1_r4, which is currently the latest release available. For this reason, it's possible that there may be some differences between the preview firmware and the changelog, but it should be quite close. In fact, there are commits dated just one day before Google I/O began.
If you're curious about what Google has been up to, check out the changelog and start looking for some of the jokes, secrets, and curious details. There are always quite a few gems buried in updates of this size.

Ubisoft Confirms Assassins Creed Syndicate Will Not Have A Companion App

In news that will come as manna from heaven for all but the most masochistic Assassin’s Creed fans, Ubisoft has confirmed there will not be any form of companion app for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

Over the past few years Ubisoft has been increasingly keen on shoehorning mobile apps and services into its Assassin’s Creed games, coming to a head with last year’s frankly terrible Assassin’s Creed Unity Companion App. A number of chests in the main game were permanently locked, and could only be opened by making hours of progress in the Companion App.

For those, like me, who love clearing their map of pesky icons and combing over every collectible, those blue chests were a pain and an eyesore. A few months ago Ubisoft patched Assassin’s Creed Unity so the companion app was no longer needed, but the damage had been done.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag took a slightly less intrusive approach, allowing users to manage their fleet and earn extra money and resources while away from the game. Crucially, no content was actually locked away behind the app.

And so we come to Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, which won’t have of this at all. Ubisoft has said it will be focusing “all their efforts on the core experience. There will not be a companion app." The Victorian London adventure will have less superfluous content, with no companion apps and no form of multiplayer whatsoever.

Anything which can lessen the bloat of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is a win in my book. The multiplayer always felt unnecessary and the companion apps benefited nobody, so it looks as if Ubisoft is taking criticism on-board this time around.

Are you glad to see the back of companion apps? What are your thoughts on the removal of all multiplayer elements?

Rumour: AMD Skipping Computex In Favour Of June 16th Launch For Radeon 300 Series

Reports are circulating AMD has specifically forbade any hardware partners from showcasing any Radeon 300 series graphics cards during Computex Taipei next week.

If the rumours are true, AMD is instead waiting until E3 2015 as previously suspected. AMD is running a dedicated PC gaming conference along with a host of partners, and it would indeed be the ultimate stage to show off its latest and greatest hardware to a gaming audience.

The PC Gaming Show is set to take place on Tuesday, June 16 at 5PM PT / 8PM ET / 1AM BST. The likes of Blizzard, Paradox, Bohemia Interactive and Obsidian will all be there in some fashion, and it could be the perfect place to showcase a gamer-focused GPU range.

Obviously the big downside to this is that it’s going to be a couple more weeks until we can see the Radeon 300 graphics cards, disappointingly. In the meantime, it’s looking as if Nvidia is planning to launch its GeForce GTX 980 Ti at the very same Computex event AMD is skipping, giving team green a short-term advantage.

In the meantime, AMD has rented out advertising on New York’s Times Square’s largest display, teasing the upcoming graphics card. The 25,000 foot digital signage touts AMD as ‘Processing the Revolution’, and looks to be showing an image of the upcoming Fiji-based Radeon GPU.

Is E3 the right place for AMD to be showing off new graphics hardware? AMD is certainly heaping a lot of pressure on itself with these cards, will they live up to the hype? Let us know what you think below!

AMD Releases Catalyst 15.5 Beta Drivers With The Witcher 3 And Project CARS Suppo

It’s certainly taken its merry old time but AMD has released its latest drivers, the Catalyst 15.5 beta drivers. These long-awaited drivers are targeted at two recently released games which have suffered from poor performance on AMD hardware - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Project CARS.

The changelogs for the drivers indicate AMD users can expect roughly 10% performance increases on single-GPU Radeon R9 and R7 setups in The Witcher 3, and a 17% boost for users with multi-GPU Radeon R9 or R7 series in Project CARS.

The driver update also includes CrossFire profiles for The Witcher 3. Unfortunately one of the known issues is poor performance in The Witcher 3 for CrossFire users, as well as random flickering. AMD suggest disabling anti-aliasing, and if this fails then disable CrossFire. Not the best fix for power users trying to make the most of their multi-GPU setups.

If you’ve got yourself an AMD Radeon graphics card or mobile or integrated AMD GPUs, then you’d well to head on over to the AMD Catalyst 15.5 beta driver download page and grab this.
If you've given this driver a go, let us know below if you've noticed any improvement in performance in either of these titles!
