TRAI exposes over a million email addresses to spammers after netizens make their net neutrality submissions

net-neutrality

One of the most talked about mass movements online in India came to an end as the 24 April deadline was crossed. In a short span, more than a million emails were sent to TRAI regarding the consultation paper on OTT services and net neutrality. TRAI had set April 24 as the deadline for people to make submissions on the consultation paper on the topic.

Most of the responses sent to TRAI were via ‘Savetheinternet.in’ — a site created by a few proponents of net neutrality in India. Unwittingly, TRAI has exposed email address of all those who had submitted their responses and made them publicly available for spammers to scrape.

Apart from a campaign on social media and FM radio, AIB had also released a video about net neutrality and the consequences if TRAI succumbs to telecom operators’ demands. At the end of the video, AIB had asked viewers to sign up on savetheinternet.in and tweet using #SaveTheInternet.

People were directed to the home page of ‘savetheinternet.in‘ where all of TRAI’s 20 questions were answered in detail. One could send an email with the pre-written answers by a single click or could edit the replies and send it.

The net neutrality debate began after Indian telecom operators urged to TRAI to change certain regulations related to OTT services like WhatsApp, Skype, Vibes and others, which would have enabled carriers to bucket the Internet and charge differentially for different services.

This is where the TRAI has leaked the E-mails : http://trai.gov.in/Comments/27-Mar=to-10-Apr/27-mar.html

TRAI to set 'minimum download speed' for mobile Internet

Thanks to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), you may no longer have to grapple with the slower Internet speed on your mobile phone. The telecom regulator has just released a consultation paper to examine the minimum download speeds for mobile phones. In a release, the regulator says the consultation paper on amendment to “The Standards of Quality of Service for Wireless Data Services Regulations, 2012” aims to examine the benchmark for “minimum download speed” being offered through various technologies, so that the minimum download speeds are transparently made available to the consumers. "The Authority (TRAI) has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding the poor download speed experienced by them. The Authority after examining the issue felt that there is now a need to mandate the 'minimum download speed' for the wireless data services," TRAI added in the release. The authority seeks to prescribe a minimum download speed for wireless data services, which will be based on the data on minimum download speed reported by service providers in the last three qarters. The regulator has proposed along with each tariff plan for data services, mentioning minimum download speed should be mandatory on all vouchers, websites and advertisments etc. Currently, there's no binding regulation on telcos to deliver a minimum speed for wireless services. If implemented, the move will help users, especially heavy data consumers, make a better decision on selecting operator. Do you think mentioning 'minimum download speed' should be made mandatory?
