Micromax has held discussions with a group of investors led by Japanese mobile telecom firm SoftBank Corp.MUMBAI: Indian smartphone maker Micromax Informatics Ltd is looking to raise capital from private investors or through a stock market listing, as it expands into new business segments including personal computing, its co-founder said.

Micromax, backed by private equity firms including Sequoia Capital and TA Associates, has held discussions with a group of investors led by Japanese mobile telecom firm SoftBank Corp , Reuters reported last month.

Those talks were about the sale of a 20 percent for up to $1 billion, two people had said, which values the Indian firm at around $5 billion.

Vikas Jain declined to confirm any ongoing talks but said the company was also open to the option of an initial public offering of shares possibly on a local stock exchange.

"As we talk, both the options remain open. We have various (investment) i-bankers who have approached us with either of the options and we're given to understand that there is sufficient amount of interest in Micromax," Jain told Reuters in an interview.

Micromax, which entered the Indian handset market in 2008 with cheap large-screen phones, had hired banks in 2010 for an IPO to raise as much as $150 million but scrapped the plan a year later, citing poor market sentiment.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced details of the Batman: Arkham Knight Season Pass. Coming in at a wallet-shredding £32.99 ($50), the Season Pass promises to pack in six months worth of post-launch content.
To put that into perspective, Battlefield 4’s Premium Pass is a little more expensive at £39.99, as is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s £34.99 Season Pass. In terms of single-player games however, the Batman: Arkham Knight Season Pass is easily the most expensive we’ve seen, and is almost double the price the base game can be pre-ordered for over on Nuuvem at the moment.
In terms of what Batman: Arkham Knight’s Season Pass will contain, Rocksteady will be creating new story missions, legendary Batmobile skins, challenge maps, additional character skins, more super-villains invading Gotham City, and even new driveable race tracks for the Batmobile. We didn’t know there was anything like that in there to begin with, so this is an interesting detail.
The Batman: Arkham Knight Season Pass will be available to purchase for £32.99, or included as part of the Arkham Knight Premium Edition. That Premium Edition will set you back an eye-watering £87.98 for the complete version on PS4 and Xbox One, or £67.98 on PC.

In addition there's also the previously announced pre-order bonus guff already detailed. Placing your money down ahead of launch will net you a playable Harley Quinn across a series of challenge maps set in the Blüdhaven Police Department, while the PlayStation 4 will be getting exclusive Scarecrow Nightmare missions. Phew, it's like Watch Dogs' launch all over again isn't it?

Leaked AMD Slide Reveals Zen CPU Core Block Diagram

A diagram has leaked ahead of a May 6th embargo, appearing to introduce AMD’s Zen micro-architecture. While this should be taken with a pinch of salt, the slide looks to be from an internal AMD presentation detailing a block diagram of the upcoming CPU.
The Zen architecture is set to feature inside AMD’s upcoming Summit Ridge microprocessor family, and this block diagram reveals AMD is renewing focus on per-core performance rather than delivering more cores. The Integer Pipeline of Zen will be widened by 50% in comparison to the Excavator Modules, providing two massive 256-but schedulers.
In the diagram below you can see AMD's upcoming Zen core on the right, and Excavator on the left, the last of AMD's Bulldozer family.

The design of Zen is much on the vein of AMD’s own Phenom series, shifting away from cramming two weaker CPU cores into each block and providing a single, more powerful core. As you can see on the Excavator, there are two integer clusters while there is just one on the Zen. This will boost Zen's single-threaded and floating point performance.
The floating point scheduler, on the right of Zen, and in the centre for Excavator, is now twice as wide on Zen, with dual 256-bit FMAC units in comparison to dual 128-bit. Excavator was capable of syncing the two together for 256-bit AVX instructions, so it looks as if Zen will be capable of a 512-bit wide floating point unit. In theory this should double the rate at which instructions can be processed.
Unfortunately the downside to all of this is that AMD's Zen won't be seeing the light of day for another year, but this embargoed image suggests we could be hearing a lot more about it comec May 6th.

F1 2015 System Requirements

Another year, another F1 game from the ladies and gents at Codemasters. This time things are a little different though, with Codemasters moving F1 2015 to a brand new, next-gen engine for the first time, with all the graphical bells and whistles attached.
The world's fastest sport demands the world's most accurate simulation, and F1 2015 looks to deliver. Unprecedented track and car detail combine with an overhauled physics engine, providing what should be the most authentic looking and handling F1 game from Codemasters yet. Before you strap yourself in though, you might want to get a look at exactly what the new game engine demands with the official F1 2015 system requirements.

F1 2015 Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9700 3.16 GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 GHz
  • RAM: 4 GB System Memory
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 460 or Radeon HD 5870 1GB
  • GPU RAM: 1GB Video Memory
  • HDD: 20GB Available Space
  • DX: DirectX 11

F1 2015 Recommended System Requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 3.4GHz or AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB System Memory
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290
As expected these are a significant leap up from what we saw with F1 2014, but the minimum are still extremely reasonable. As per any racing game, a solid 60fps is ideal, so you'll be wanted to target that here. It's unclear what settings the minimum requirements will net you, but being Codemasters there's sure to be plenty of scalability in the graphics settings.
While the recommended requirements for F1 2015 are pretty massive, this is a similar deal to Codemasters' other racer Dirt Rally, in that there's a fairly large gulf between minimum and recommended requirements for F1 2015. We take this to mean F1 2015's well optimised, scalable, and capable of using real hardware grunt if it's there, rather than a lack of optimisation. Obviously we'll need to get our hands on it to know for sure, but Codemasters has a reputation for delivering on this front.

Micromax likely to announce new product category on April 30 | I ,the Admin of ReviewRulezz ,think that Micromax could now possibly enter the Laptop Segment in which it could prove to be a big hit offering both cheap and high end laptops(ultrabooks).

micromax event

Micromax has sent out press invites for an event on April 30. The company has sent a cryptic image with a tagline ‘The next smart thing is coming soon’ indicating that the company is venturing beyond the smartphone, tablet and smart TV category, and foraying into a completely new segment.

The company has shared an image of a smartphone, tablet and a TV, indicating the evolution of the company’s business. Next to the TV is a ‘question mark’ which confirms that the company is not expanding its existing portfolio, but is completely entering into a new product category altogether. It will be interesting to see what product Micromax will be launching on April 30.

Prior to this invite, the company released a teaser on Twitter with a side image of what looks like 2-in-1 PC device. The image comes with a tagline ‘ The smartest move ever.’ This product is most likely to be launched at the April 30 event.

Xiaomi Mi 4i: Top 5 features

xiaomi-mi-4i-features
Xiaomi recently launched the Mi 4i at its global launch event in Delhi. The company calls it a flagship, which is priced at Rs 12,999 and will go on sale via Flipkart on April 30. Staying true to Xiaomi’s philosophy, the Mi 4i is an affordable handset with more than decent set of specifications. Let’s take a look at the top five features on the new smartphone.

Display

The Mi 4i flaunts a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS OGS display with a density of 441ppi. While impressive, it is not just about the numbers. The display boasts something the company likes to call ‘Sunlight Display’. This technology essentially uses dynamic tone mapping to measure the lighting conditions around the smartphone and adjust the display’s colors and brightness. Depending on the conditions, it will either highlight the shadowy areas or tone down highlights, giving the best possible results.

Processing chops

Under the hood, the Mi 4i is powered by a Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset. This is the second-generation Snapdragon 615 chipset manufactured by Qualcomm India. It includes a combination of four 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and four 1.1GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and is 64-bit capable.

The chipset is paired with Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM. While it is too early to comment on the smartphone’s performance, Xiaomi has shared some benchmark scores. It claims to boast AnTuTu score of 40,253, Quadrant score of 25,686, and CFBench score of 57,216.

Sefie camera

In addition to the 13-megapixel camera at the back, the Mi 4i has a 5-megapixel snapper up front for selfie lovers. The 5-element camera comes with f/1.8 aperture and 80 degrees wide angle lens. The camera also comes with a gamut of features like countdown mode, and Beautify mode among others. The timer gives you enough time to pose and also lets you know where to look when clicking a selfie. The latter is a feature that guesses the age and gender to apply one of the 36 beauty profiles. It can smoothen skin, brighten eyes, and slim your jaw among others.

Connectivity

Unlike the Mi 4, the Xiaomi Mi 4i does support LTE in India. What’s more, the dual-SIM smartphone has LTE support on both the SIM slots. In India, the smartphone is compatible with both FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800), and TD-LTE Band 40 (2300). Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS.

MIUI 6

The Mi 4i is the first smartphone in Xiaomi’s lineup to run on Android Lollipop. The operating system is wrapped under the company’s MIUI 6. The new UI may not bring a lot of changes, but there are a few new features, including some focused at the Indian audience.

The first feature is the Visual IVR, which would help people save time when they interact with the automated calling system from banks, carriers and other service providers. This feature essentially shows you a visual representation of the IVR menus, so you don’t have to wait for the machine to dictate all the options. The feature will already know all the options and will punch the right numbers and even add pauses when required to get the user to the option they want.

The other feature is support for six Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Unlike other companies that simply acquire language packs, Xiaomi says it works with native speakers of the language in order to get more relevant translation.

Alibaba reported to pick up 25% stake in Micromax at Rs 30,000 crore valuation, chairman Sanjay Kapoor may exit

micromax-canvas-spark-5

Chinese online giant, Alibaba, is reportedly looking at picking up a 25 percent stake in Micromax. The investment is likely to happen via its affiliate Ant Financial (erstwhile Alipay). Micromax was reportedly in talks with Alibaba and Japan’s Softbank. The report comes a day after Xiaomi announced Ratan Tata had invested an undisclosed sum in the Chinese smartphone company, which has turned into a major rival for Micromax, selling over a million smartphone units in less than five months of its entry in India.

The move would help Micromax’s existing investors – TA Associates, Sequoia Capital, Sandstone Partners and Madison India Capital HC – to unlock their investment in the company and could sell their entire stake. TA Associates had acquired a 15 percent stake in 2009 for Rs 100 crore, while Sequoia Capital, Sandstone Partners and Madison India Capital HC own 2.68 percent and around 0.4 percent stake respectively.

The reported investment by Alibaba could see Micromax valued between Rs 24,000 – Rs 30,000 crore. If this deal is successful, there will be a major rejig in the top management, and Economic Times reports that it may even lead to Chairman Sanjay Kapoor’s exit. Citing anonymous sources, the report states that the fundraising plan may be completed by June end.

The report also states that there are some internal differences between Kapoor and the promoters over the future business strategy. Reportedly Kapoor feels that online sales is the way forward, the promoters want to stick with traditional offline retail as it still brings 70 percent of revenue to the company. Rahul Sharma, Rajesh Agarwal, Sumeet Kumar and Vikas Jain are the four founders and they collectively own a little less than 80 percent of the company.
One of the sources told the publication that once the deal is done, for which the final call will be taken by the investment committee of Micromax, Kapoor may exit and new board members will be added. The investment committee comprises of promoters, top management and existing investors.
We contacted Micromax and the spokesperson of the company said:
As a company policy, we do not comment on any market speculation. Mr Sanjay Kapoor continues to be our chairman & an integral part of the company. Micromax board and management work under clear principles of consensus, and they are working cohesively (on all strategic & operational issues) with complete unanimity to build Micromax’s leadership in all our markets.

TRAI exposes over a million email addresses to spammers after netizens make their net neutrality submissions

net-neutrality

One of the most talked about mass movements online in India came to an end as the 24 April deadline was crossed. In a short span, more than a million emails were sent to TRAI regarding the consultation paper on OTT services and net neutrality. TRAI had set April 24 as the deadline for people to make submissions on the consultation paper on the topic.

Most of the responses sent to TRAI were via ‘Savetheinternet.in’ — a site created by a few proponents of net neutrality in India. Unwittingly, TRAI has exposed email address of all those who had submitted their responses and made them publicly available for spammers to scrape.

Apart from a campaign on social media and FM radio, AIB had also released a video about net neutrality and the consequences if TRAI succumbs to telecom operators’ demands. At the end of the video, AIB had asked viewers to sign up on savetheinternet.in and tweet using #SaveTheInternet.

People were directed to the home page of ‘savetheinternet.in‘ where all of TRAI’s 20 questions were answered in detail. One could send an email with the pre-written answers by a single click or could edit the replies and send it.

The net neutrality debate began after Indian telecom operators urged to TRAI to change certain regulations related to OTT services like WhatsApp, Skype, Vibes and others, which would have enabled carriers to bucket the Internet and charge differentially for different services.

This is where the TRAI has leaked the E-mails : http://trai.gov.in/Comments/27-Mar=to-10-Apr/27-mar.html

The truth about Asus warranty process in India [Spoiler Alert: It ain't pretty]

ASUS-Nexus-71
A couple of weeks ago, BGR India revealed the hoops a buyer has to jump through to get after sales support if one has bought an Asus device from Flipkart. Since then, Asus has sent out what seem to be misleading media statements that claim its warranty practices in India are the industry standard and Asus goes a step further by providing support even when the user doesn’t have an invoice. Let’s take a look at what really transpired.
In a statement to Medianama reacting to BGR India‘s original article, Asus told the publication that “in this particular case the customer was unable to produce the invoice which led to warranty being determined based on date of manufacturing.” This is factually incorrect.
According to the customer (who also happens to be a BGR India staff member), there was not one instance where the customer told Asus that he did not have the invoice. In fact, one can easily get an invoice reissued from Flipkart by going through the shopping history and the customer did send the invoice to Asus. Here’s the proof as provided to us.
GenerateInvoicefromFlipkart
Flipkartinvoice
invoicesenttoasusIn its statement, Asus also says that it requires the invoice of the product to expedite the service. Here’s the excerpt from the company’s statement: “In order to offer a quick and convenient service to the consumer, the service team requests for the invoice as the proof which expedites the process in terms of reaching out to the specific partner and taking the appropriate action for the case.”
What Asus is hiding here is that it does have a warranty approval process. The industry practice is that the customer goes to a service centre with the product and its invoice, which is enough to get the necessary warranty. However, in Asus’s case, one has to first email the invoice to their central service centre, which will then approve the warranty, and only then the customer is supposed to visit the service centre. Here are the screenshots of mails exchanged with Asus where they first said the product was not under warranty and then later asked the customer to go through an approval warranty process.
Asusaskingapproval
Asusapprovalemail
This is not the industry standard. Nowhere does Asus mention the warranty approval process but the screenshots of emails exchanged by the customer with Asus central service centre team (notice the subject line warranty approval) clearly shows it has a warranty approval process. In this case, the customer, who first contacted the central helpline, was explicitly told not to visit the service centre before the warranty is approved. And to get that warranty approval, the customer is first supposed to mail them the invoice.
The other claim from Asus is even more shocking. Here is the proud statement: “Out of a total of 1262 certified buyer reviews, 45 have provided 1/2 stars.”
It is unbelievable that a brand would put such a statement in their press release. Majority of the electronics companies, chase a six sigma level of quality – a standard made popular by GE and Motorola. In Six Sigma, the quality level is 3.4 defects per million opportunities, which means that there are 3.4 defects in a million units. Anyone can use the process sigma calculator and calculate the sigma levels of Asus as per their statement. As per their statement, a defect rate of 3.5 percent is a an achievement. And in a million units the defects per million opportunities or defects will be 35,658. This is a sigma level of 3.3 – which is a terrible quality level for any global company.
