OnePlus 2 rumors: You’re invited to the July 27 official launch … in virtual reality

Smartphone newcomer OnePlus has a new phone in the works, which is being referred to as the OnePlus 2. First discussed in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) Reddit session, the OnePlus 2 is likely to remain good value for money while still offering high-end specifications.

The company has also hinted at the possibility of a wearable device being released in the near future, and new reports are talking about a OnePlus One Lite smartphone. We’ve put together everything we know so far about OnePlus’ plans into this handy roundup post.

OnePlus announces virtual reality launch event for OnePlus 2

OnePlus certainly knows how to create a little buzz. The company announced July 27 for the OnePlus 2 launch event, which normally isn’t a big deal. However, OnePlus wants its fans to be right there front and center. That doesn’t mean that you will get a free ticket to be there in person, but you will get the next best thing — the entire event will be streamed in virtual reality.

OnePlus’ Carl Pei said, “In our industry, product launches tend to be the same. An auditorium, a keynote, and a seated audience. For the OnePlus 2 launch, we didn’t want that barrier between us and you; we want to invite you into our world, because you’re a major part of it.”

Witnessing the event in VR means that you will be right there next to the OnePlus team, and you will be able “check out the phone in a new way and maybe even find a few hidden Easter eggs.”

OnePlus recently hosted a pair of contests  giving two fans a chance to go to the event, and it has been revealed that those fans will actually help present the event in VR
.
You can’t view VR unless you have a special headset, and OnePlus has created their own version of Google Cardboard. Just like Google Cardboard, it will work with most Android phones, and you will be able to order one soon. It’s not clear, but we are under the assumption that Google Cardboard will work as well.
Be sure to mark your calendar for July 27 at 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT.
Earlier reports out of China indicated that OnePlus would host a press event in July, and they were right.
In late May, OnePlus invited its fans to check out its upcoming June 1 event in a Google+ post. The invite said, “We’re always looking for ways to shake up the tech industry. And we think it’s time for a change. Find out more June 1.”
oneplus invite
We expected OnePlus to announce the OnePlus 2 on June 1 based on the above image, but what we got instead was a series of OnePlus One flash sales from June 1 through June 7, in which the starting price dropped to $250.
Earlier on, OnePlus held a special event on April 20 2015, but didn’t reveal the OnePlus 2, or the OnePlus One Lite there either. Instead, the invitation system to buy the OnePlus One was dropped entirely. However, the company took the opportunity to inform us it would be back for the OnePlus 2.
When OnePlus first confirmed the existence of the OnePlus 2, the company stated that the 2 will launch between April and September of 2015. Since then, OnePlus’ Carl Pei has continued to place the release date in that large timeframe, without specifying an exact date. In early December 2014, Pei told BGR India the handset will launch in either the second quarter or the third quarter of 2015, reiterating the vague window mentioned before. Now, we’ve finally got the official July 27 date.

One Plus 2 will feature a Type C USB port and the Snapdragon 810 v2.1 chip

OnePlus isn’t one to keep quiet about its upcoming devices. The unorthodox smartphone maker revealed yet another spec of its highly-anticipated OnePlus 2 on Twitter in late June. Apparently, the OnePlus 2 will sport a reversible Type C USB port instead of the standard Micro USB port that most Android phones have onboard.

In terms of processing power, previous rumors pointed towards the OnePlus 2 rocking the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip, and OnePlus has confirmed it. However, there is one detail that is very important. The OnePlus 2 will be using an updated 810 chip known as v2.1, which is important because the previous version of the chip caused phones to overheat and slowdown. Qualcomm’s issues were the main reason why Samsung decided to go with its homegrown Exynos processor on the Galaxy S6 instead.
The updated version of the 810 won’t overheat, according to OnePlus: “We worked very closely with Qualcomm’s engineers to integrate an improved version of the chipset (v2.1) in the OnePlus 2, and fine-tuned both hardware and software,” the company said. “The 2 will be ‘cooler than ever.'”

OnePlue 2 pricing rumored to be more competitive than previously thought

Reports out of China say the OnePlus 3 will be priced at 2,000 Yuan ($322), which is slightly more than the OnePlus One’s original launch price of $300. We are taking this one with a grain of salt, since OnePlus CEO Pete Lau posted on the social network Weibo that 2,500 Yaun or $400 would be a “reasonable” price for the phone. Of course, there is a chance that Lau was aiming high in order to shock us when the phone does get announced.
The main attraction of the OnePlus One was its incredibly low price paired with high-end hardware. The Chinese company priced its phone so low that it barely made any profit off the sales. A source told Business Insider that OnePlus will sell the 2 for much less than the standard $500-and-up price tag of your average high-end smartphone. No specific number was mentioned. Although the specifications have yet to be officially announced, those familiar with OnePlus’ plans say the hardware on the 2 will be high-end and powerful.

Just how high-end will the specs be?

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau told followers on the Weibo social network the OnePlus 2 will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, just like the LG G Flex2  and the HTC One M9. In late May, a benchmark test was discovered showing a phone called the OnePlus One A2001 running exactly that chip. The octa-core processor was accompanied by 3GB of RAM, and the device used Android 5.1 as its operating system. The test was dated May 20. Prior to this, a rumor from reseller Coolicool claimed the 2 would come with a Snapdragon 805, which seemed unlikely at the time.
Other specs revealed by Coolicool — so take them as you will — include a a 5.5-inch screen with an unspecified pixel resolution, 32GB of storage, a 3300mAh battery, as well as 16 and 5-megapixel cameras.  It pegged the OnePlus 2’s release for the third quarter of 2015, which is in line with OnePlus’ own enigmatic predictions, and had put a high $552 price estimate on the device.
Anonymous sources speaking to GizChina.com in January 2015 agree with the 5.5-inch screen size, and put the screen resolution at 2560 x 1440 pixels. The Snapdragon 810 may be joined by 4GB of RAM — which will see it compete with Xiaomi’s Mi Note Pro — and be powered by a 3300mAh battery. The January report suggested the price would be 2700 yuan, or about $435.

Unique design will be customizable

OnePlus’ first smartphone wowed tech fans with its unique design and original style. It seems that OnePlus is continuing on that path with the 2, as a report from Business Insider states the company’s next handset will be even more customizable. The first time around, OnePlus offered limited numbers of special StyleSwap backs for the One, including the very popular and extremely elusive bamboo back. Those who manage to get their hands on a OnePlus 2 will have even more color and material options.

The OnePlus 2 may run OxygenOS

The first OnePlus smartphone runs CyanogenMod’s own custom ROM built upon Android and many expected that it would appear on the OnePlus 2 as well. However, following CEO Peter Lau’s admissions to a Chinese publication regarding a home-grown custom ROM for the next phone, the company released OxygenOS.
OxygenOS is OnePlus’ own Android-based operating system, and was released at the beginning of April. It can be installed on the OnePlus One smartphone, and will most likely come pre-installed on the OnePlus 2.

What we learned from the AMA Reddit chat

The AMA was hosted by OnePlus’ Carl Pei and David S. on Reddit. The two answered questions on several topics, including preorders, the limited supply of OnePlus One smartphones, and future products. The company agreed that it underestimated demand for its first smartphone, but added that it remains committed to its motto of “Never Settle.” Initially, preorders for the OnePlus will only be open for a limited amount of time, due to production limitations.
“Things definitely haven’t gone as planned,” Pei said. “Looking back, we probably misjudged demand by 30x, and are scrambling to catch up. Our team wasn’t built to handle this growth. We’re hiring like crazy, and things should be under control in a few months.”
In the meantime, OnePlus said it’s focused on creating the OnePlus 2, so that sufficient numbers of the device will be available ahead of the projected 2015 launch. The company didn’t reveal much about the device’s specs or price, but it did hint that the OnePlus 2 may be smaller than the original.
“We’ve seen a lot of people asking for a smaller device, and want to let everyone know that we hear you,” OnePlus said. “We’re thinking about it.”
Unfortunately, OnePlus said that it will probably use the invite system for its next smartphone too, before moving on to limited preorders again. “It will probably be invite-only for a short period of time, after which pre-orders are rolled out,” OnePlus wrote, much to the chagrin of every fan who’s been slighted by the highly selective system.

What about the OnePlus One Lite?

According to an anonymous source speaking to DroidPile, the OnePlus One Lite will be an improved version of the OnePlus One, but not quite matching the specs of the OnePlus 2. This suggests the OnePlus 2 may be more expensive than the OnePlus One, and the Lite may be the company’s budget model for 2015. Expect another invite-only system to be put in place for prospective buyers.

Is a OnePlus Watch in the works?

The company also addressed rumors that it’s working on a wearable device. “Re:wearables,” OnePlus wrote in response to a fan’s question about the new category. “Yes. Unsure if/when/how we’ll release it though.”
Images of the OneWatch leaked earlier this summer, so it’s entirely possible that OnePlus was just being coy. Either that, or the pictures aren’t real.

Motorola Moto G 2015 is Going to be a HUGE Disappointment

Dire news for Motorola fans as a new leak has emerged for the upcoming Moto G. Apparently, the device has barely changed from last year’s revision, and this is terrible. It’s still a bit early to tell, but this is bad news for Motorola fans in general, and we’re waiting for the official announcement.
Motorola’s Moto G has always been a very popular device. This is supposed to be a mid-tier budget device and the second generation has gained a lot of attention. Motorola is currently working on next-gen versions of many of their existing devices, such as the Moto 360 or the Moto X, as well as the Moto G. We didn’t expect a lot to change with this year’s Moto G, but we didn’t expect this little to change either. According to the recent leaks, the Moto G 3rd generation will have the same tech specs as the second generation one. The only notable difference lies in the design of the device. Apparently, this is a marketing move from Motorola which aims to promote its upcoming DROID device.

Motorola Moto G 3rd Generation Tech Specs

The upcoming Moto G will pack the same 5-inch display with a Snapdragon 410 on it, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of native storage which can be expanded with a MicroSD card and a 13MP primary shooter. The device has 4G LTE support and the new device seems to have gotten an AnTuTu score of 23,355 as opposed to last year: 18,249. There’s still some improvement seen, but we’d best take these leaks with a pinch of salt. The ideal move would be to wait for Motorola to pull the curtains on this device and actually reveal it before we can make any speculations. Right now, it would make sense that Motorola seeks to promote the DROID brand, but we doubt these tech specs are definitive. Check out the leaks for yourself and let us know what you think about this. Are you a bit disappointed?

Hitman 6 , Hitman 6 PC System Requirements

Wow, stealthing our way out the other side of E3 2015 and we have already infiltrated Hitman's system requirements. And be warned they are pretty hefty.

So the next game in the series is simply called Hitman. They kept it like this because it marks the beginning of a new journey for Hitman. Obviously they didnt give any consideration to the world wide complication of having two games called exactly the same. They could have called it Hitman 2015 or something. Anyway, its Hitman number 6 in the series and I want to give you a look at the latest Hitman system requirements to see if your PC will be able to play Hitman, when it arrives at the beginning of December. Right, lets recap on what we know about Hitman.

Hitman Release Date: 8th December 2015
Platforms Hitman is available on: PC, Xbox One, PS4
Hitman full development began: 2012
Hitman Background: There is a world beyond ours. Beyond nations, justice, ethics. It never sleeps. It exists everywhere. And once you enter....there is no going back. Welcome to the World of Assassination. You are Agent 47, the world's ultimate assassin.

Key Hitman Game Features
Agent 47 has changed his name to Agent 48. Joke! You still play as Agent 47 and he hasnt changed his name. Could you even imagine?
Stealth Action, where you can complete contract missions in a variety of ways
The checkpoint save, introduced in Hitman Absolution, is being removed. Thank goodness
Save games are brought back so you can save your progress at any point
Hitman will be released as episodic content, first via direct download
Contracts, new locations, new targets will be released at regular points during 2016
At the end of all the episodic content releases, Hitman will be released as a complete physical copy
Locations will be more detailed, populated and larger than before
There will be more possible ways to eliminate your target
Contracts mode will return
David Bateson will be voicing Agent 47 again. He is the familiar voice behind all of Agent 47s speaking parts
Time specific contracts available to players, for example a target only is available for a 48 hour real world period. After that time they are gone for good
Levels populated by up to 300 complex AI NPCs. With unique routines and personalities
Or one shot contracts, where if you fail to dispatch the target you never get to retry
Deliver live content and gameplay specific to gamers needs, from feedback after each episode release
PC Beta will arrive 1 week after the PS4 "beta exclusive"
Beta is available for pre-orders now
Hitman Game Engine
Hitman Absolution, the last game in the series to release, was brought to us on the Glacier 2 game engine. All areas of this game engine system have been revamped and enhanced. Looking at the official Hitman minimum system requirements below we can presume that some significant tweaks have been applied as it needs quite the beast PC to get Hitman to run.
Hitman Minimum System Requirements
OS: Windows 7 or Windows 8 and above - 64bit only
CPU: Intel Core i5-670 3.46GHz / AMD Phenom II X4 805 (speculative CPU req)
RAM: 8 GB System Memory
GPU VRAM: 2GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon Hd 6870
HD: 30 GB Free Hard Drive Space (speculative download size)
DX: DirectX 11

Thats some pretty potent minimum system requirements for Hitman. The 8GB RAM min requirement pops out. Obviously with so many unique AI NPCs on each level, the CPU power will need to be high. These feel a little over egged to be honest, but as soon as we get our hands on this we will see how it runs on some older, weaker machines as well as some powerful hardware.
So to recap, Square Enix are going to be moving the Hitman experience away from a play your title for a week when it comes out and then move on to something else, and over towards a community experience where an evolving ongoing game rolls out over a year of new missions and targets, with a finale that draws the whole story together months after our first play.
It all sounds quite exciting and an interesting new approach to a game. Of course there is also the chance of micro transactions and frustration for people who miss certain time limited targets (because they are on holiday or dont have an internet connection during that period) or cant be arsed to wait 12 months to find out how their game unfolds.

Samsung To Launch Galaxy S7 In The Second Half Of 2015

For the first time in its history, Samsung might release a second (or the third) Galaxy S flagship in the same calendar year. The smartphone, known as the Galaxy S7, will supposedly be launched earlier than scheduled to rival the range of iPhones that will break cover later this year.
The company's Galaxy Note lineup hasn't seen the same amount of love that the Galaxy S flagships have, so this move makes sense from Samsung's standpoint. However, since it's just a rumor for the time being, we suggest you take it with a grain of salt until there's evidence to prove otherwise.
It is not known if this will replace the Galaxy Note series or launch alongside, but we won't be surprised either way. With an announcement scheduled for sometime in September, the company will apparently look for a late 2015 launch of the Galaxy S7.
Launching too many flagships in a calendar year is something that Sony has received significant flak for, so we don't think Samsung will be exempt from that if this rumor materializes.
The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge have reportedly matched the company's sales estimates, so it's possible that Samsung will replace the lineup with the new Galaxy S7 series. All of this seems far fetched at the moment, so we'll wait until more details emerge on the same.

Would you like to see a third or fourth Galaxy S flagship in 2015?

LG G4 Sets Guinness World Record For Most Selfies Taken With A Phone

LG G4 sets Guinness World Record for most selfies taken with a phone

In Mexico City, LG gathered around hundreds of people to take selfies with the LG G4 smartphone, in a bid to enter the Guinness Book of World records for the most selfies taken with a single smartphone. The previous record was 531 selfies, set in the US.

LG however, managed to top that by taking 746 selfies, thus beating the record by a substantial margin. And the only reason they had to stop was because they ran out of people and not because the phone was out of battery, which is comforting news for prospective owners of the smartphone.

"With one selfie taken approximately every 10 seconds, the LG G4 used for the record attempt managed to go the distance without needing a recharge or a battery swap," said Daniel Aguilar, who coordinated the event for LG Electronics Mexico.

The record was set on the 13th of June near the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. The event was supervised by a Guinness World Records representative, so setting the record was the plan all along.

The LG G4 is one of the best high end Android flagships available in the market and the company has done a very good job of creating ample buzz for the smartphone as it gradually makes its way to global markets.

Google Gears Up To Bring NYC's New Public Wi-Fi Hotspots To Your City

Google Gears Up to Bring NYC's New Public Wi-Fi Hotspots to Your City

Last year, New York City introduced LinkNYC, its innovative plan to turn the city's ailing payphone infrastructure into a network of 10,000 gigabit Wi-Fi hotspots. Google just bought the key players behind the plan, and hopes to scale the model to more cities.
OK, brace yourself, you're about to hear a lot of company names, but I promise I will explain everything so that it makes sense. Google recently launched an urban technology incubator called Sidewalk Labs. That company bought two companies behind the LinkNYC plan, Titan and Control Group. Those two companies will now be united into one company, called Intersection. To recap, Sidewalk Labs (Google) just acquired Intersection (Control Group and Titan), which is behind the New York Wi-Fi hotspots. Got it?
The LinkNYC project will continue exactly as planned: There are supposed to be 500 hotspots installed by the end of this year, and 4000 by the end of 2016. The grand total will be up to 10,000 total hotspots in the five boroughs. Outwardly, neither Sidewalk Labs nor Intersection has stated their intentions to start any new projects together, but the goal is to try to scale the LinkNYC model to other cities. That could mean a number of things. Most obviously it could mean Wi-Fi hotspot networks in more cities.
In a lot of ways LinkNYC in particular dovetails nicely with Google's ambitions. It's primarily an advertising business, and we all know that's how Google makes it's money by selling ads. It also works nicely as a complement to infrastructure projects like Google Fiber and more recently, Goolg'e Project Fi wireless carrier. Of course, once again, you should always be concerned about Google's pervasive creep into every aspect of our communications infrastructure. This is also a data-mining company.
More than than just Wi-Fi hotspots, though, you might see these companies' technology in more and more public spaces. You'll recall Control Group's last project, the impressive NYC digital subway kiosks. Prior to becoming Intersection, Control Group also deployed iPads in the redesigned Delta terminal at LaGuardia Airport, making it the sole tolerable location in that transportation hellhole.
Sometimes Google's plans are so big that it's hard to imagine how an immediate acquisition might pan out in the long run. In particular, I'm interested to see what happens to the Control Group side of the business. That company's ambitious projects have always been impressive, and you have to respect its capability for getting things done with byzantine bureaucracies like New York's MTA and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Still, for all the promise, neither the kiosks in the subways nor the iPads at LaGuardia have panned out to be as transformative as the pitch. The former, in particular, is so far most effective as a giant digital billboard. (That doesn't mean they won't get better over time; the project is still new.)
Either way, for now, you should be more sure than ever that Google is far more than an internet company. Google's coming soon to a city near you.
